Perfect binding – an appeal for help

Does anyone know where I can get my Credo document perfect bound (without breaking the bank)? If anyone can think of anywhere, please post a comment. If you just want to recommend any good printers and binders for anything, that would be cool too.

Thanks!

Credo Rationale

I’ll post part 2 of my process journal soon, but I just thought I’d rationalise what I’m doing with the project first.

Book: A detailed account (visual and written essay) of my design process and thinking. Cogs theme, abstract photography, quotes and written passages.

DVD: A succinct and moving summary of my design process and thinking, with a more light-hearted tone. Continues the cogs and abstract photography themes, continues with quotes, but only has limited amounts of copy.

CD: Evidence of my design process and thinking in PDF folio format.

Outer box: Plain outside with circular die cut showing the title of the book through it. Inside shows a cogs pattern.

Inner box (CD/DVD casing): Holds book facing outwards, CDs facing each other. Perhaps with cogs pattern.

The medium is the massage

Tony recommended I have a look at Marshall McLuhan & Quentin Fiore’s ‘The Medium is the massage’. I haven’t read it, but in terms of design, it’s worth a look. In some ways it is much like the Credo documents that many of us will produce – small in scale, and discussing his beliefs (credo) and acts as a manifesto of those ideas.

It’s a very, very simple design, but it is giving me a few ideas on how to improve my Credo project.

I have finally scanned all my sketches, bits and bobs. Compiling it has actually been a clarifying process. It has made me look at the raw ideas I had in the beginning, see their validity and make me want to work them back in. There are good ideas that I remained oblivious to, as I discarded them as simply part of the process.

Rather than making you scroll down this blog endlessly, I thought I would just attach a PDF process journal.

A lifetime of technology

A quote I found whilst writing our lit review made me think about the technologies of our generation.

“Technology is everything that comes along after you’re born” (Caroll et al. 2002, quoting Alan Kay 1990)

One thing that rose to popularity after we were born is the mobile phone. We were the first people I know to own a mobile phone in 1992. Here is a picture of me using it.

I can’t help but laugh at having to use two hands to use a mobile phone.

Inspirational quotes

I’ve been looking at quotes to include in my Credo project, and came across Anthony J. D’Angelo. I’m not usually one to get absorbed in ‘inspirational motivation’ as I’m just far too cynical, but I found these interesting, clever, insightful and yes, inspirational.

I will post some updates on the project shortly. At the moment, I’m finding it a little difficult to get in the headspace for it.

I thought the Crumpler catalogue would be of interest in relation to the Credo project, particularly in terms of the way it is packaged.

It was designed by Tin & Ed.

Below are some (not very good) photos of how it all works.
